Your contribution: Making a difference together
In many developing countries, people with amputated limbs have no chance of getting a prosthesis – for most it is unaffordable.
This is where The Hand Project comes in: The prostheses made at our team events are provided free of charge to people in developing countries, where they can be a real life saver.
Mechanical, robust and designed to be easily operated with the remaining hand, stump or other suitable object, they enable the recipients to write, eat, ride a bike, work – in short, to lead a life of dignity and worth.
What makes this project special?
Every single prosthetic hand is made at a team-building event like yours. You assemble the prosthetic hands together as a team – and every move counts! At the same time, your event funds the production of the prostheses.

Bringing dignity and opportunity to people in developing countries
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 650 million people around the world live with a disability. Many of these disabilities are the result of accidents, landmines, armed conflict and diseases such as diabetes or polio, which often lead to amputations.
The challenge is particularly severe in resource-restricted countries, where 80 percent of people with disabilities live. Of the estimated 3 million amputees worldwide, 2.4 million live in developing countries. According to the WHO, less than 5 percent of the population in these countries has access to rehabilitation services. This gap in care significantly hinders the reintegration and independence of amputees and exacerbates existing social and economic inequalities.

Chris, the founder of The Hand Project, is a driving force for people facing seemingly insurmountable challenges due to upper limb amputations. Aiming to give people more dignity and quality of life, he set up The Hand Project in 2019 after realising that many existing projects provide hands, but not the comprehensive support that is really needed.
His work knows no boundaries: Splitting his time between New Zealand, Germany and Canada, Chris regularly travels to Africa and the subcontinent to personally deliver and fit prosthetic hands. He has given more than 1,200 people a new hand and a new lease on life – a commitment that moves hearts and hands alike!
